GM to the Top 1% ☕

Counting today, there are 122 days left in the year. Take out weekends, the holiday freeze, and the two weeks in December when nobody signs anything, and you have roughly 70 working days that can actually move a number.

Here is the stat that should set your week. Quota attainment across B2B is sitting near 42 percent, down from 53 percent four years ago. In the same market, the top 20 percent of reps generate 53 percent of all revenue.

Read those two numbers together. Selling did not get harder for everyone. It concentrated. And the reps who will be in that top fifth on December 31 are not going to earn it in November. They are deciding it right now, in the dead week before Labor Day, when everyone else is coasting into September.

💡 CONCENTRATION IS NOT A TALENT STORY

The comforting explanation for a 42 percent attainment number is that quotas got unreasonable. Some did. That is not what is producing a top fifth that carries half the revenue.

What produces it is that capacity stopped being the constraint. Every rep on your team now has unlimited output. Research, sequences, call prep, follow ups, proposal drafts. All effectively free. When capacity is free, the only thing that separates two reps is where they point it. And most reps point it at everything, evenly, which is the same as pointing it nowhere.

The top fifth made a different call. They looked at a pipeline of 40 open opportunities and admitted that 9 of them will produce the year. Then they gave those 9 the kind of attention that used to be impossible to give any of them. Not more activity. More concentration. The market did not reward the reps who did the most this year. It rewarded the reps who were willing to be obviously, uncomfortably lopsided about where the effort went.

🔧 THE LAST 122 DAYS AUDIT

Four moves, all doable before Wednesday.

1. Print the list and cut it in half: Export every open opportunity with a close date this year. Sort by whether a named executive has personally said the words "we are doing this." Everything without one moves to a watch list.

2. Find the 70 day math: Take your remaining gap to quota and divide by your average deal size. That is how many deals you need. If your surviving list has fewer than three times that number, your problem this quarter is coverage, not closing.

3. Assign the lopsided week: Pick the top three deals from the surviving list and block four hours each, this week, for work that only you can do. Executive alignment, business case math, a live reference call. Not a follow up email.

4. Kill something publicly: Tell your manager which two deals you are pushing out of the year, and why, before they ask. Reps who forecast down in August get believed in December.

🎯 THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK

Cut your open pipeline to the deals where a named executive has said yes out loud, then give the top three of them four uninterrupted hours each before Friday. The goal is not to work more days than you have. It is to stop spreading 70 good days across 40 deals that will never all close.

❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY

How many of your open deals have an executive who has personally said the words "we are doing this"?

Reply with the number and the size of your open pipeline. The ratio tells you your quarter.
