GM to the Top 1% ☕
Picture your next buyer the night before your call. She pastes her company's situation into an AI tool and gets a clean, confident three-paragraph answer on her options.
Then she joins your call, and you open with, "So tell me a little about your business." She just read a better summary than that one.
💡 THE EDGE IS UNDERSTANDING, AND YOU CAN WASTE IT
Gartner surveyed 645 B2B buyers in August and September 2025 and released the results in May. Buyers were more likely to credit a sales rep than GenAI on four things.
Helping them advance to the next purchase step: 28 points. Quantifying the benefit for their organization: 21 points. Making them feel confident in the decision: 32 points. Understanding their needs: 39 points.
Read that last one again. On understanding the buyer, people beat the machine by the widest margin. That is your edge, and it is also the thing most discovery calls waste.
Here is the misread. Reps hear "buyers still want humans" and relax. But the edge is not that you are a human. The edge is that you can show you understood. A buyer who cannot see it in the first ten minutes has no reason to credit you over the tool in her other tab.
🔧 THE NEEDS PLAYBACK
Four moves to make understanding visible on every first call.
1. Write the hypothesis: Before the call, write three sentences on what you think this buyer is trying to fix, why now, and what it costs them. Use their filings, hires, and posts.
2. Read it back first: Open with, "Here is what I think is going on. Tell me where I am wrong." Do not ask about their business until you have said this.
3. Collect the corrections: Write down every correction they give you. Corrections are the highest-value part of the call because they show what an AI summary missed.
4. Put one number on it: Close the call by saying what the problem costs them in one number, and ask if it is close. Gartner found quantifying benefits is where reps beat GenAI too.
🎯 THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK
Before your next first call, write the three-sentence hypothesis and open with it. Afterward, count how many corrections the buyer gave you. If it is zero, they were being polite or you were being vague.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
What is the first sentence out of your mouth on a discovery call, and would an AI tool have said it better?
Reply with your opener. I will rewrite two of them next week.
See you tomorrow.
