GM to the Top 1% ☕

I want to tell you about the quarter I built the outbound machine I had always wanted, and watched it quietly wreck my numbers.

I wired up the whole thing. Enrichment, sequences, an agent drafting personalized openers, all of it firing on a schedule. On paper I went from a couple hundred touches a month to a few thousand. I felt like a genius for about three weeks.

Then a friend on the buying side sent me a screenshot. My email, sitting in his junk folder, next to two identical looking pitches from competitors. Same structure. Same fake first line. He had not opened one of them in months. I had not been reaching people. I had been feeding a filter.

💡 THE MACHINE SCALED MY REACH AND DELETED MY SIGNAL AT THE SAME TIME.

The reply rate did not crash in a dramatic way. It bled out. A little lower each week, easy to explain away as seasonality, until I looked up and the number that mattered had gone to almost nothing while my activity chart looked incredible.

The deal that saved my quarter did not come from the machine. It came from one email I wrote by hand at nine at night, to a VP I had met at a conference two years earlier. No template. I referenced a specific thing she had said on a panel and one specific problem I knew her team was chewing on. She replied in eleven minutes. We closed six weeks later.

Here is what that taught me, and it is the whole lesson. The machine is extraordinary at volume and worthless at trust. It can send seven thousand emails and cannot earn a single real relationship. The moment I confused motion for progress, I automated away the exact thing that was actually closing deals.

🔧 HOW TO KEEP THE HUMAN SIGNAL WHILE THE MACHINE HANDLES VOLUME

Let the agent do the grunt work. Guard the moments that require a person.

1. Automate the research, not the relationship: Let the machine surface the trigger and the context. You write the actual reach out to the accounts that matter.

2. Rank your list by who already knows you: A warm second-degree contact will out convert a thousand cold sends. Work that tier by hand, first.

3. Send one deliberate message a day: One email, fully human, to one person who could change your quarter. Thirty of those a month beats seven thousand into the void.

4. Watch reply rate, not activity: Activity charts lie beautifully. Replies from real buyers are the only number that pays you. Track that one.

🎯 THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK

Pick the three accounts that would most change your number this quarter. For each, write one email by hand tonight. No template, one specific detail that proves you actually looked. Send them before you touch a single automated sequence this week.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

When was the last time a deal came from something you automated versus something you wrote by hand?

Reply with the story. The honest answer usually surprises people.

See you tomorrow.

P.S. The hand-written email that saved my quarter still followed a structure, I just kept the human in the loop. I turned the structures I lean on into 500 prompts: the research digs, the specific-detail openers, the reframes that make a buyer reply in minutes. It is 27 dollars: https://store.edwardgorbis.com
