GM to the Top 1% ☕
The best call of my year lasted nineteen minutes and I barely had to sell. The VP opened with "we already want to work with you, walk me through pricing." I hung up and almost told my team I had crushed the discovery.
I had not crushed anything. I had won that deal eleven months earlier, and I did not even know it at the time.
Here is what actually happened, and why it changed how I think about the whole job.
💡 YOU DO NOT WIN THE SHORTLIST. YOU FUND IT.
A year before that call, a director at another company asked me a favor that had nothing to do with a deal. She was hiring for a role I knew nothing about, and asked if I could intro her to two people in my network. No pipeline. No angle. I made the intros and forgot about it.
She got hired at the account that later ran the RFP. When the shortlist got built, she was in the room, and she said one sentence I never heard. "Talk to Edward first." That sentence beat every competitor before I even knew the deal existed.
For years I would have told you I won that deal with a great first call. That story is flattering and it is wrong. The call was the delivery truck. The product was a favor I banked with no expectation of return, sitting in someone's memory for a year.
Buyers rank vendors before they call, and they buy the one they ranked first 77% of the time. I got ranked first in a hallway conversation I was not present for. That is not luck. It is the compounding return on being useful when there was nothing in it for me.
🔧 THE BANKED-FAVOR SYSTEM
You cannot fake this in the quarter you need it. You build it quietly, on purpose, over time.
1. Give without a hook: Help people in your orbit with no tie to a deal. The cleanest favors are the ones with zero visible return, because those are the ones people remember.
2. Stay useful to people who cannot buy from you: The director who cannot sign today gets hired at the account that can tomorrow. Treat every relationship as a ten-year relationship.
3. Make yourself easy to vouch for: Give people a crisp, true sentence they can repeat about you. "Talk to Edward first" only works if someone can say what you are actually good at in one line.
4. Keep a favor ledger, not a favor scoreboard: Track who you have helped so you can keep showing up, not so you can collect. The moment it feels transactional, the compounding stops.
🎯 THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK
Think of one deal you "won on a great call." Trace it backward. Find the earlier moment, the intro, the favor, the point of view, that actually put you on the list. Then go do that exact upstream thing for someone who cannot buy from you right now.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
Who in your network could put you at the top of a shortlist you have not heard about yet?
Reply with the name that came to mind. When did you last do something useful for them with no ask attached?
See you tomorrow.

P.S. Building a reputation that puts you on the shortlist before the deal exists is a system, not a personality trait, and it is most of what we work on inside the AI-Native Sales Leader course. It is a full operating model for running enterprise deals in the agent era, the upstream reputation work, the coverage, the judgment a tool cannot do for you.
