GM to the Top 1% ☕
Sunday thought, one week from Labor Day.
This week we walked through a market where shortlists form before first calls, funnels collapse into chat threads, and a research assistant writes your first impression for you. Every filter between you and the buyer is now a machine.
Except the last one. At the end of every complex deal there is still a moment where a person looks across a table, physical or not, and decides whether they believe you. No model sits in that seat. Attention is allocated by machines now. Trust is still allocated by people.
💡 THE LAST GATE HAS NO API
Here is what fifteen years and half a billion dollars in closed enterprise deals taught me, compressed. Deals are lost in the filters but they are won at the gate.
The filters, visibility, deliverability, shortlist presence, are necessary and increasingly technical. Master them or you never get a seat. But passing filters only earns you the meeting. The signature comes from the gate, and the gate runs on older software. Did you say the true thing when the convenient thing was available. Did your forecast to your own boss match what you told the buyer. Did you take ownership of a risk before it appeared in the contract redlines.
The strange gift of this era is that machines took over everything except character. Which means character, consistency, and earned credibility are now the only inputs you fully control that the market cannot commoditize. That is not a soft skill footnote. In 2026 it is the entire remaining moat.
🔧 THE TRUST LEDGER
A Sunday practice, fifteen minutes, four entries.
1. Log the true things: Write down each moment last week you told a buyer or your own leadership something that cost you comfort. Those entries are deposits.
2. Log the conveniences: Note where you shaded a number, let a wrong assumption stand, or over promised. No judgment. Withdrawals compound too, and unlogged ones compound fastest.
3. Check the spread: More withdrawals than deposits two weeks running is the earliest leading indicator of a bad quarter you will ever find. It shows up before pipeline does.
4. Pick one repair: Choose a single relationship where the balance is negative and make one honest deposit this week. A correction, an admission, a risk named early.
🎯 THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK
Start the ledger tonight. One page, two columns, five minutes. Keep it for the four weeks left in the quarter and watch which deals move. My experience says the correlation will unsettle you in the best way.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
Who is the one buyer who would take your call even if you switched companies tomorrow?
Reply with just their first name. That name is your real net worth in this profession.
See you tomorrow.
