GM to the Top 1% 🏁
There was a rep on my team a few years ago who was exceptional.
She was closing 140% of quota. She had a gift for executive relationships I genuinely admired. She made it look effortless in a way that I, in certain moments, let bother me more than it should have.
I caught myself spending mental energy on what she was doing instead of what I was building.
Not consciously. Not in an obvious way. Just a background hum of comparison that was pulling my attention away from my own territory and my own work.
The day I noticed it, I made a decision that changed the rest of that year.
I stopped looking sideways and started looking at my own data.
📊 WHAT HAPPENED WHEN I STOPPED COMPARING
In the six months before that decision, I had been measuring my progress against her numbers. Her pipeline. Her close rate. Her deal velocity.
None of which I had direct visibility into. I was making up a story about her results and using that invented story as the yardstick for my own.
In the six months after, I measured myself against one thing: the previous version of me.
Was my close rate better than last quarter? Was my average deal size growing? Was my discovery-to-close timeline shrinking?
Those are real numbers. Numbers I had full visibility into. Numbers I could actually move.
My pipeline grew 34% in those six months. Not because I got more talented. Because I stopped spending attention on something I couldn't influence and redirected it toward what I could.
🤖 THE AI TIP INSIDE THIS STORY
One of the highest-value uses of AI in sales is self-benchmarking.
Most reps don't do this because it requires structure. Here's how I do it with a simple prompt I now run at the end of every quarter:
"Here is my sales performance data for the last 90 days: [close rate, average deal size, average sales cycle length, discovery-to-proposal ratio, follow-up response rate]. Compare it to my previous 90 days: [prior data]. Identify: 1) where I am improving, 2) where I am declining, 3) the single metric that, if improved, would have the highest impact on revenue. Then give me three specific actions to move that metric."
I call this the Personal Benchmark Prompt.
It takes 10 minutes at the end of every quarter. It has replaced every leaderboard comparison I used to make. And it has done more for my Q-over-Q improvement than any sales training I've attended.
It's one of 44 prompts in the Pipeline Intelligence chapter of the 500 AI Sales Prompts collection.
That chapter covers self-analysis, deal velocity diagnostics, territory planning, and quarterly review frameworks. Built around one principle: the rep who understands their own data better than their manager does has a permanent edge.

💡 THE PRINCIPLE
Comparison pays attention to someone else's numbers instead of your own.
It's not envy. It's distraction.
The rep who spends their attention tracking what a peer is doing is not spending that attention on what they can build.
You are not competing with the rep next to you. You are competing with the previous version of yourself.
That is a race you can actually win. And the compounding on that race, over a career, is extraordinary.
Q1 ends today. Q2 starts tomorrow.
The question that matters: is the rep you are today measurably better than the one who started this quarter?
✅ YOUR HOMEWORK
Pull your three most important sales metrics from Q1.
Compare them to Q4. Not to your quota. Not to your peer. To the previous version of you.
Write down one number you're proud of. Write down one number you're going to move in Q2.
That's your game plan.
