Nobody loses a deal because of a bad close.

They lose it in the discovery call they rushed through six weeks earlier.

I've debriefed hundreds of lost deals over 15 years. The pattern is almost always the same.

The close felt hard because the qualification was soft.

💡 WHERE DEALS ACTUALLY DIE

Here's what I see when I pull the tape on lost deals:

The prospect said "we need to think about it" because the rep never quantified the cost of doing nothing.

They accepted "we're evaluating options" as an answer instead of a signal to go deeper.

They mapped the champion but not the economic buyer, the legal team, or the IT security review that quietly killed it in week 9.

We obsess over closing techniques like we're one magic phrase away from a yes.

But buyers don't decide no at the end of the process. They decide no in the middle — when they realized you understood your product better than you understood their problem.

🔑 THE SHIFT THAT CHANGES EVERYTHING

The best closers I've ever worked with aren't aggressive. They don't use pressure tactics. They don't manufacture urgency out of thin air.

They just do harder discovery than everyone else.

They ask the questions that make prospects uncomfortable. They stay silent after the hard question instead of rescuing the conversation. They don't move to demo until they've heard the prospect describe the cost of their problem in their own words.

When you do that, the close isn't a technique. It's a natural conclusion to a conversation the prospect actually wants to finish.

The close is easy when the discovery is hard.

YOUR HOMEWORK

Before your next discovery call, write down three questions you've been too afraid to ask. Too direct. Too uncomfortable. Too presumptuous.

Ask all three.

The discomfort you feel asking is exactly proportional to the value of the answer.

❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY

What's your single best discovery question? The one that has changed deals for you?

Reply and I'll feature the best ones in a future issue.
