My daughter asked me on the swing set yesterday what I do for work. I started to say "I sell software."
I stopped. I said something different. "I help people figure out what to spend their week on so they get paid for it."
She thought about it for a second. Then she said, "Do you do that for yourself?"
💡 YOUR COMP PLAN IS THE BEST PRICING DOCUMENT YOU OWN. READ IT LIKE A BUYER.
The shift this year is real. 60% of SaaS comp plans now prioritize renewals, upsells, and multithreaded deals over raw new logo bookings. Flat bonuses are gone. Commission accelerators are back. Outcome multipliers replaced activity SPIFs at most public companies.
If you have not opened your comp plan since the comp call in January, you are working off a 2024 priority map in a 2026 market. The reps quietly outperforming this year are not working harder. They are working on the line items that compound. Renewal defense. Multi-thread expansion. Net new logo at a target ICP, not just net new logo.
The Sunday move is not to grind. The Sunday move is to read the document that decides what your grind is worth.
Open the plan. Find the highest accelerator. Find the lowest multiplier. Find the activity you are paid the least for but spend the most on. The next 90 days reorganize around that gap. Not the gap in your skill. The gap in your alignment.
I have watched reps double variable in one quarter without making one extra cold call. They just stopped doing the work the comp plan no longer rewarded.
🔧 THE 14-MINUTE COMP RESET
Four prompts. One coffee. Sunday afternoon.
1. Find the accelerator math: What is the multiplier at 110%, 120%, 150% of plan. Write the dollar value at each threshold. That number is your real motivation.
2. Find the renewal weight: What percentage of your variable is tied to retention or expansion. If it is more than 30%, your week should look very different than it does.
3. Find the new-logo-quality clause: Most plans now have an ICP modifier. Some logos pay more than others. Mark the five that pay the most. They are your real Monday list.
4. Find the activity you are paid zero for: This is the one. The work that earned a SPIF in 2024 and pays nothing now. Stop doing it Monday morning.
🎯 THIS WEEK'S HOMEWORK
Open your comp plan tonight before bed. Run the four prompts above with a notecard. By Monday at 9 AM, you will have rewritten your week without anyone telling you to. That is the move.
❓ QUESTION OF THE DAY
What is the one line item in your comp plan you have been ignoring all year?
Reply with the line. I will tell you the fastest move to align around it.
See you tomorrow.
