GM to the Top 1% 👋

Most reps spend 30-45 minutes prepping for a discovery call.

I spend 10.

And my conversion rate went up 23% when I made the switch.

🎯 TODAY'S INSIGHT: The 10-Minute Discovery Prep Framework

Here's the truth about discovery call prep:

More time ≠ better prep.

I used to spend 45 minutes before every call. Reading 10-Ks. Scrolling LinkedIn. Googling news articles. Building a mental dossier on the prospect.

Then I'd get on the call and forget half of it. Or worse — I'd show off my research instead of actually listening.

The fix? A framework that forces focus.

🔑 THE 10-MINUTE PREP FRAMEWORK

I call it 3-2-1 Prep. Here's how it works:

3 Minutes: The Company Snapshot

You need exactly three things:

What they do (one sentence — if you can't say it simply, you don't understand it)

What's happening (recent news, funding, earnings, leadership changes)

Where they're headed (hiring trends, expansion, new products)

That's it. No 10-page deep dive. Just enough context to ask smart questions.

Where to find it in 3 minutes:

  • Homepage "About" section (30 seconds)

  • LinkedIn company page → "Posts" tab for recent news (1 minute)

  • Quick search: "[Company] news 2026" (1.5 minutes)

2 Minutes: The Person Snapshot

Role & tenure (new to role = different priorities than 5-year veteran)

Career path (did they come from sales? Operations? Product? This shapes how they think)

Recent activity (anything they've posted or commented on in the last 30 days)

Pro tip: If they posted something recently, you have a warm opener. "I saw your post about X — curious what prompted that."

1 Minute: Your Three Questions

Write down exactly three questions you want answered by the end of the call:

  1. Pain question: What's the problem they're actually trying to solve?

  2. Impact question: What happens if they don't solve it?

  3. Timeline question: Why now? What's driving urgency?

That's it. Three questions. Written down. In front of you.

Everything else you ask should ladder up to these three.

📊 WHY THIS WORKS

Most reps over-prepare on research and under-prepare on questions.

They walk into calls knowing everything about the company's Q3 earnings but with no clear idea of what they're trying to learn.

The 3-2-1 framework flips that:

  • Enough context to be credible

  • Enough focus to be curious

  • Enough structure to stay on track

When I switched to this system, three things happened:

  1. Prep time dropped from 45 minutes to 10 — I got 35 minutes back per call

  2. Conversion rate went up 23% — because I was listening more, performing less

  3. Discovery calls got shorter — 25 minutes instead of 45, same outcomes

⚡ THE AI UPGRADE

Here's how I use Claude to make this even faster:

I paste in the company's homepage, their LinkedIn "About" section, and any recent news.

Then I prompt:

"Give me a 3-sentence company summary, the most important thing happening at this company right now, and three discovery questions I should ask a [title] about [topic]."

90 seconds. Done.

I'm not using AI to write my pitch. I'm using it to compress my prep.

The human work — listening, adapting, building rapport — can't be automated. But the research grunt work? Absolutely.

🛠️ THE TEMPLATE

Here's exactly what I have in front of me on every discovery call:

COMPANY:
- What they do: _______________
- What's happening: _______________
- Where they're headed: _______________

PERSON:
- Role & tenure: _______________
- Background: _______________
- Recent activity: _______________

MY 3 QUESTIONS:
1. Pain: _______________
2. Impact: _______________
3. Timeline: _______________

NOTES:
_______________

Print it. Fill it in. Bring it to every call.

🤖 AI NEWS THAT MATTERS

Gong just released their 2026 State of Revenue Intelligence report. Key finding: reps who ask 11-14 questions per discovery call have the highest win rates.

Under 11? Not enough depth. Over 14? Feels like an interrogation.

The sweet spot is asking fewer, better questions — and actually listening to the answers.

✍️ YOUR HOMEWORK

Try the 3-2-1 framework on your next discovery call.

Time yourself. See if you can prep in under 10 minutes.

Then pay attention to how the call feels. Are you more present? More curious? Less performative?

💬 QUESTION OF THE DAY

What's your discovery call prep process? Do you have a system, or do you wing it?

Hit reply — I'm always looking to steal good ideas.
