For the first three years of my career, I had a belief I didn't know I had.
I didn't discover it from a book or a training session. I discovered it by listening to a recording of myself.
The belief was simple: I didn't think I belonged in rooms with senior executives.
I had the product knowledge. I had the skills. But something in the way I showed up in executive conversations was slightly off. A little too much deference. A little too quick to follow their framing instead of holding my own. A subtle energy of "I hope I'm good enough to be here" instead of "I have something worth your time."
I didn't know I had this belief. I just knew my executive conversations weren't converting as well as they should have.
🎙️ HOW I FOUND IT
I was listening back to a discovery call with a CRO. A call I thought had gone reasonably well.
And I heard it.
She had pushed back on a point I made about her current process. It was mild. A light challenge.
And in the recording I could hear myself immediately soften, qualify my statement, and give ground I didn't need to give.
Not because she was right. Because I was uncomfortable being disagreed with by someone at her level.
Three words into her pushback, I had already started backing down.
When I noticed that, I started looking for it everywhere. And I found it in more conversations than I wanted to admit.
🤖 THE AI TIP INSIDE THIS STORY
Call recording is the most powerful coaching tool most reps use the least.
Here's a prompt I now run on transcripts from any executive call where the deal didn't progress the way I expected:
"Here is a transcript from a sales call with a C-level executive. Analyze it for: 1) moments where the seller gave ground unnecessarily, 2) questions the seller asked that signaled uncertainty rather than genuine curiosity, 3) times the seller talked more than needed after the prospect stopped speaking, 4) moments where the seller could have held their frame and didn't. For each one, suggest the alternative language."
This prompt has a name in the 500 AI Sales Prompts collection. I call it the Frame Audit. It's in the Executive Conversations chapter.
That chapter has 31 prompts total. Frame audits, executive prep, how to handle a CFO who's skeptical, how to get back in control of a conversation that went sideways, how to close a C-level after a long sales cycle.
The beliefs that cost you deals are invisible until something forces you to look.
Call recordings reviewed through a structured AI prompt are the fastest way I've found to make the invisible visible.

💡 THE PRINCIPLE
The most expensive beliefs are the ones you don't know you have.
I wasn't lying to myself. I wasn't being irrational. I had a story running in the background that I had never examined.
And that story was costing me deals.
Once I found it, I could work with it. Not by forcing myself to be confident. By becoming aware of the specific moments where the belief showed up, and making a different choice in those moments.
That CRO? I went back to her three months later with a sharper approach and a completely different energy.
We ended up working together.
