Here's what most follow-up sequences look like:
Email 1: "Just following up..." Email 2: "Circling back on this..." Email 3: "Wanted to bump this to the top of your inbox..." Email 4: "I'll assume you're not interested..."
Garbage. All of it.
Every email says the same thing: "I have nothing new to offer, but I'm hoping you'll respond out of guilt."
That's not follow-up. That's pestering.
Here's what actually works.
🔑 THE 5-TOUCH FOLLOW-UP SEQUENCE
The principle: Every follow-up must add value or change the angle.
If you're just "checking in," you're wasting their time and yours.
Touch 1: The Warm Recap (Day 1 — same day as meeting)
Subject: Good talking today — here's what I promised
[First name],
Great connecting earlier. Three things I took away:
[Specific thing they said about their situation]
[Specific challenge they mentioned]
[Specific goal or timeline they shared]
As promised, here's [the resource/case study/link you mentioned].
I'll send over [proposal/next steps/whatever you agreed to] by [date].

Why it works: You're proving you listened. Most reps send generic recaps. This one mirrors their exact words back to them.
Touch 2: The Value Drop (Day 3)
Subject: Thought of you when I saw this

Saw this [article/report/data point] and immediately thought of our conversation about [specific challenge they mentioned].
[One-sentence summary of why it's relevant to them]
Link: [link]
No response needed — just thought it might be useful.

Timing isn't right (totally fair — want me to check back in Q3?)
You went another direction (also fair — I'd love to know what tipped the scales)

Touch 5: The Breakup (Day 21)
Subject: Should I close your file?

I'm doing some pipeline housekeeping and wanted to check in one last time.
If now's not the right time, no hard feelings. I'll close out your file and won't keep filling your inbox.
If something's changed and it's worth reconnecting, just reply "yes" and I'll reach back out.
Either way — I've enjoyed our conversation. Hope our paths cross again.

Why it works: Scarcity + respect. You're signaling that your time is valuable too. And "Should I close your file?" has a 3x higher response rate than "Just checking in."

When I switched from "just checking in" follow-ups to this value-add sequence:
